Capela da Memória

In the town of Nazaré

"On the edge of the cliff stands the Capela da Memória, where, in 1182, according to legend, the Virgin Mary saved the nobleman Dom Fuas Roupinho. He was chasing a white deer (the devil in disguise) in thick mist, when the Virgin stopped his horse as it was about to follow the deer over the cliff. The chapel was built in gratitude and the azulejo tiles inside portray the legend. Nearby there is a pillar with an inscription commemorating Vasco da Gama’s visit here after his voyage to India, to give thanks to Nossa Senhora de Nazaré for his safe return."

The castle of Estremoz is the result of the restoration of the Palace that King D. Diniz built for his wife, Queen Santa Isabel. It is the Rainha Santa Isabel Pousada.

Just outside the Fire Island Inlet
We left the Great South Bay early on Day 2, and entered the calm sea with a rising sun.

The sea was calm and not great for sailing. There is a holding area for NYC container ships before they get close to the city. These ships are actually anchored here.

Liberty and the sailboat

On the second day, as we entered New York Harbor...
The boat traffic was chaotic. There were private boats like this sailboat and ferries and water taxis and tour boats. To make matters worse, Jet Skis were buzzing around with no apparent direction!

This is the battlefield of Antietam. My husband was always interested in the Civil War and recently found out his great-great grandfather fought in the battle of Antietam.

We went there this weekend and met distant family members, third cousins, not one of which would be here today if great, great-grandfather Allen McLane died in this battle.
